This Cookie Policy explains how cookies and similar technologies may be used when you visit everywherehistory.com.
1. What are cookies?
Cookies are small pieces of information that a website can store in your browser or device.
They can be used for purposes such as:
- operating a website;
- maintaining security;
- remembering preferences;
- measuring how a website is used.
Similar technologies may also be used for comparable purposes.
2. WordPress.com cookies
EverywhereHistory is hosted on WordPress.com, which is operated by Automattic.
WordPress.com may use cookies and similar technologies on websites it hosts.
The cookies used can depend on the features enabled on the website and whether a visitor is also logged into a WordPress.com account.
Automattic provides more detailed and current information in its Cookie Policy.
3. Required cookies
Some cookies are necessary for the website and WordPress.com platform to operate correctly and securely.
These may be used for purposes such as:
- website security;
- basic technical functionality;
- remembering technical preferences;
- determining whether a browser accepts cookies;
- providing functions requested by a visitor.
Where permitted by applicable law, strictly necessary cookies do not require consent.
4. Website statistics
WordPress.com provides Site Stats functionality that helps count visitors and understand how the website is used.
WordPress.com states that Site Stats use a tracking pixel and may use cookies or similar technologies to recognise visitors and provide aggregate statistics, including information about visitor locations.
I use only the statistics provided as part of the WordPress.com service.
I do not currently use Google Analytics or another separately installed analytics platform.
5. Optional cookies
EverywhereHistory aims to minimise optional cookies and tracking.
At present I do not intentionally use:
- Google Analytics;
- advertising or advertising tracking;
- affiliate tracking;
- social-media feed widgets;
- visitor accounts;
- comments;
- an external newsletter or mailing-list platform;
- marketing cookies.
Where consent is legally required for optional cookies or similar technologies, they should not be used before the visitor has been given the required choice.
6. Third-party content
Some EverywhereHistory articles include interactive maps created with uMap and based on OpenStreetMap data.
These maps are embedded from the Swiss uMap service at umap.osm.ch, which is hosted by the Swiss OpenStreetMap Association (SOSM).
When an embedded map is loaded, the visitor’s browser connects directly to the uMap service. This means that technical information, such as the visitor’s IP address, browser information and the requested map, may be transmitted to and logged by that service.
SOSM states that its websites may use cookies or similar session-tracking methods, that accesses are logged, and that it generates anonymised aggregate usage statistics. SOSM also states that it does not track use across multiple websites.
EverywhereHistory does not enable browser geolocation for its embedded uMap maps.
Depending on the configuration of an interactive map, map tiles or other resources may also be loaded from services used by uMap or OpenStreetMap.
Other externally hosted content may be added to EverywhereHistory in the future. If this introduces additional cookies, tracking or data processing, this Cookie Policy will be updated.
7. External links
EverywhereHistory frequently links to external sources and websites.
An ordinary link does not mean that EverywhereHistory controls the cookies used by the destination website.
If you click an external link, the privacy and cookie rules of that website will apply.
8. Managing cookies
You can use your browser settings to view, delete or block cookies.
Blocking some cookies may affect how certain website functions work.
Where the website provides controls for optional cookies, you can also use those controls to manage your choices.
9. Changes to this Cookie Policy
This Cookie Policy may be updated if EverywhereHistory introduces new features, plugins, analytics services, embedded content or other technologies.
The date at the top of this page shows when it was last updated.
